Moxibustion is the process of burning an herb called moxa (aka mugwort), which provides warmth at specific acupuncture points. Moxibustion has unique healing properties as it warms the area, increases circulation, and alleviates pain. Practitioners of Oriental Medicine also use moxibustion to prevent illness, boost immunity and increase vitality.
Moxibustion can be applied directly to the body, indirectly to the body on top of a layer of ginger, garlic or salt, near the body if moxa sticks are used, or attached to needle handles when used in combination with acupuncture. Spray-on moxa is usually used with heat lamps, and activated moxa heat packs can be worn under the clothes all day.
